Cognition and Communication

Thrust Leaders: Tamal Bose and Jeff Reed
Rich in content and potential, this research thrust refers to communications technology and computing systems inspired by learning and cognition of the radio environment. This is an emerging and exciting field that promises to transform the wireless communications industry in the next decade. This thrust also includes cognitive science directed at providing insights into ways to present information to human beings so they can use it most effectively.
  • Wireless@VT
Performing leading edge research in wireless communications and to produce high caliber students as future leaders for academia, industry, and government.
  • Cognitive Radio Networks: developing techniques for more efficiently use of spectrum for the purpose of enabling higher data rates and more wireless devices and developing automated ways for deploying and maintaining wireless infrastructure with minimal human interaction.
  • Human Behavior Analysis: encompassing a broad range of scientific endeavor from human sciences, medical sciences, physical sciences, and engineering in support of healthy aging and interactive learning.
  • Autonomous Secure Communications: building an autonomous and secure communication system that dynamically evolves the architecture design of a network according to its environment so that the survivability, availability, manageability, capacity, integrity, and confidentiality of the communication system can stay at its optimal level.
