Emerging Research Areas

Thrust Leader: Roop Mahajan
This area covers cutting-edge developments in the emerging and 'disruptive' technologies that are in the early stages of development but have potential to become either a significant component of one of the established thrust areas or gain status as a new thrust area.

  • Humanoid Hospital: A world class, state of the art training and simulation facility consisting of fully functional human-like patients (robots) tailored to mimic any specific or combined state of the healthy/diseased body. The hospital will serve as a training facility for students, nurses, and doctors, and also as a fertile environment for scientists and physicians to conduct research on various aspects of engineering, computer science, psychology, physiology, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and tissue engineering.
  • Accelerating Scientific Discovery through Data Mining: integrating multiple areas of expertise through extraction of interesting and actionable knowledge retrieved from massive databases for large-scale problem solution.
  • Advanced Vehicles: emphasizing multidisciplinary design and optimization, sensors and actuators, energy harvesting, structural health monitoring, nano- and micro-electro-mechanical systems.
  • Health Information Technology
  • Complex Networks
