Genuinely transformative technologies require global intellectual and creative resources. A sustainable future, in which the world’s growing population has access to energy, water, food, and medical care, requires a global perspective. We are committed to establishing an ICTAS presence on every continent.
Initiatives are already underway in Asia and South America:
Inaugurated on May 23, 2014, the ICTAS India Innovation Center is 6000-square-foot state-of-the-art research facility. Research projects will focus on
- Sustainable energy
- Next-generation wireless communications
Service Without Borders is an engineering design team at Virginia Tech. With financial support and guidance from ICTAS and the College of Engineering, students will provide engineering, fundraising, and construction services to a Tibetan refugee community in Jomsom, Nepal.
In collaboration with Outreach and International Affairs, we have partnered with Austral University of Chile. Joint projects drawing on each university’s unique strengths include
- Urban seismic risk
- Salmon waste conversion to fuel
- Wind energy noise reduction
- Mapping the Patagonian microbiome to tackle antibiotic resistance
Energy and Materials Discovery Camp
Shashank Priya, ICTAS’ associate director for research and scholarship, is organizing a free summer camp for 12- to 15-year-old girls on STEM topics including additive manufacturing, sustainable energy, and autonomous systems. This summer’s session will run from July 25 – 29, and there are a few spots still available.
If you know a student who might be interested in attending, please contact Jennifer Cacciola
