Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science

ICTAS Research

As a research institute of Virginia Tech, ICTAS helps faculty build collaborations across disciplines and seize high-impact research opportunities. ICTAS support fuels the expansion of existing projects and nurtures new ideas, generating innovative solutions to global challenges.

Focus Areas

ICTAS-supported research targets interdisciplinary fields where Virginia Tech’s talented faculty can have a significant impact on complex, multifaceted problems, and that accelerate the university's research mission. This research touches nearly all of the university's Destination Areas and Strategic Growth Areas, and we are heavily involved in leading the six areas below:

Data analytics and decision sciences

Adaptive brain and behavior

Global systems science

Intelligent infrastructure for human-centered communities

Integrated security

Economical and sustainable materials

Facilitating cross-disciplinary dialogue and providing shared facilities, resources, and administrative support can catalyze the transformation of a creative idea into a revolutionary technology. By building this ecosystem for innovation, ICTAS is creating a more sustainable future.

Research succeeds best when everyone's voice is heard, so we are working to foster a more diverse scientific community through targeted outreach and funding opportunities like the ICTAS Diversity and Inclusion Seed Grants. These and other activities support the Equity and Social Disparity in the Human Condition strategic growth area at Virginia Tech.
